Historic Marker game in Historic Riverside / Avondale

San Marco recently was profiled in the local Resident Article with regard to new Historic Markers. Do you know of Historic Markers in our Historic District? This would make for a fund scavenger hunt or a fun day with kids to teach them the history of the area.

In Avondale, I believe there is a market at the corner of Riverside Avenue and Challen for the Beerbower house. Another is at the corner of Park and King for the Riverside Baptist Church. Yet another is in Avondale down the road from the Beerbower, the Cheney/Cummer house. This is a great house that travelled, by boat, to its current location on Riverside, near Willow Branch Avenue.

Many homes have historic markers on them as well. The house here on Edgewood, 1723, has a plaque for the National Registry of Historic Places. This house was also featured in Dr. Wayne Woods Historic Preservation book.

So get out and go look for what is out there. You may not get to all of them at once, but then that is what makes it fun. You see new things when you go out and view homes. This creates new ideas for what you want to accomplish for your house. It is a great time of year to get out and walk around, enjoy learning something new about our area.
